About this issue

The Giant Hunter of the Great Lakes; or, The Maid of Michigan by Oll Coomes is a historical romance serial set during the War of 1812. The narrative opens in the Michigan wilderness with a council of Ojibway, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Huron, and Chippewa chiefs meeting with British Lieutenant Mackelogan, who distributes new rifles and blankets while recruiting them to strike against American settlements. The intoxicated whisky-trader Jabez Muggins ("Whisky Mug") disrupts the proceedings, eventually collapsing into drunken sleep. During the council, the chiefs discuss a mysterious "Spirit of the Wilderness"—a skilled marksman killing their warriors. Mackelogan speculates this may be a one-armed man called One-Armed Alf, though Chief Black Bird dismisses him as harmless. The chiefs pledge to attack Mackinaw within two days before departing. Muggins awakens in confusion as the story continues.
