About this issue

This December 29, 1880 issue of Beadle & Adams' dime novel series features "The Gentleman from Pike; or, The Ghost of the Canyon," by Philip S. Warne. The tale follows William Carleton, a melancholy young man known as "the Gentleman from Pike," and his party of mountain scouts investigating a supernatural cry echoing through a western canyon. When the source appears—a towering, hirsute creature with elongated fangs and writhing serpents sprouting from its limbs—the terrified men flee. Carleton and old scout Judd Baker witness the beast, which withstands rifle fire; Judd's horse bolts. A mysterious roar interrupts: a flash flood rushes down the canyon. The narrative shifts to reveal Captain Gunnison leading a wagon train of pioneers, accompanied by Jules St. Auburn, a refined young man of ambiguous character. A widow, Mrs. Armberleigh, has joined the party, drawing St. Auburn's sympathetic but oddly insincere interest. The train travels through dangerous canyon terrain.
