About this issue

The Shadow Silver Ship; or, The Red Rebel of the Revolution by Col. Prentiss Ingraham is a serialized sea romance set during the American War of Independence. The opening chapters concern Captain Ross Ravel, a buccaneer, whose crew has become convinced his wife Clio is a witch responsible for their recent misfortunes. The boatswain Guiteau deliberately foments this superstition among the men. Under pressure from the mutinous crew, Ravel agrees to set his wife adrift in a lifeboat rather than allow her execution. Though Ravel claims to Clio that they are near the Mexican coast and promises rescue, he must maintain the deception before his men. As night falls and a storm approaches, Clio is escorted to the deck where a small boat with provisions and oars awaits her abandonment at sea.
