About this issue

This serialized western romance by Albert W. Aiken follows two Cuban visitors, Fernando Gomes and Sebastian Esparto, as they arrive in El Paso and reveal to the Alcalde and police captain that Manuel Escobedo—a bandit leader previously driven out by the American "Fresh of Frisco" (Jackson Blake)—perished in a shipwreck near Havana. Before his death, Escobedo inherited considerable wealth through his sister Isabel's advantageous marriage, which he had intended to use for revenge against Blake. The Cubans announce themselves as Escobedo's heirs and successors to this vendetta. Parallel to this revelation, a secondary narrative introduces "The Fresh in Texas," featuring the Fresh's physical prowess. The story establishes conflict between Mexican officials seeking bribery funds from local gamblers and the shadowy threat posed by the mysterious strangers harboring old grievances.
