About this issue

This April 1905 issue of Beadle & Adams' weekly contains "Ocean Guerrillas; or, The Planter Midshipman," a serial romance by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham. Set in eighteenth-century Louisiana, the narrative follows a beautiful, vengeful woman—the daughter of a smuggling chief killed by a young plantation midshipman—who escapes captivity aboard his yacht. After a carriage accident kills her driver, she encounters Chincopin, a Native American ally, and learns that a smuggler vessel commanded by Lieutenant Argylle survives. She assumes the identity "Senora Rita" and visits a money-lender's shop in New Orleans, pledging diamonds as security for gold while planning her revenge. Don Rudolpho, the wealthy money-lender, becomes intrigued by the mysterious woman and begins plotting to pursue her. The narrative blends maritime adventure with melodrama, featuring sea battles, smuggling operations, and themes of vengeance across colonial-era Gulf waters.
