About this issue

This July 1901 pulp magazine issue contains "Double-Death's Eye Trail" and its associated serial "The Spy Queen of Wyoming" by Captain Frederick Whittaker. The narrative begins with the historical Wyoming massacre during the American Revolution—poorly-armed farmers and patriots ambushed by British soldiers, Tories, and Native Americans at the Susquehanna River. Among the fugitives, an Irish ranger nicknamed "Double-Death" stands out for his marksmanship and bravery, repeatedly firing his double-barreled rifle to protect the retreating Americans. The story shifts to Philadelphia, where a cunning woman named Charlotte Lacy schemes to seduce Everard Barbour, a young Continental officer, away from his country engagement to obtain military intelligence about General Arnold. Everard's father, John Barbour, a Loyalist trader with a suspicious pass from Arnold himself, attempts to broker the introduction. The narrative balances frontier action with intrigue and romantic manipulation.
