About this issue

"Old Bull's-Eye, the Lightning Shot of the Plains" by Joseph E. Badger, Jr., is a western action serial. The protagonist, a frontier marksman known as Old Bull's-Eye or the Lightning Shot, witnesses two white men—Perry Abbot and Don Luis de Sylva—fleeing from attacking Kiowa warriors across the desert. Old Bull's-Eye intervenes decisively, wielding his rifle and revolver with exceptional accuracy to kill multiple attackers and drive off the remainder. After introducing themselves, Abbot and de Sylva learn their rescuer is the legendary gunman they'd heard tales about. Old Bull's-Eye reveals his name through an elaborate and confused genealogical anecdote involving his twin brother and complicated remarriages. He demonstrates his marksmanship by shooting Spanish coins out of the air. The three men camp at a desert spring, where de Sylva begins explaining how he and Abbot became entangled with the Kiowas—a conflict emerging from troubles in Santa Fe a month prior.
