Beadle's Dime Library, October 1900, No. 1041. Serial by Joseph E. Badger Jr. Gold-rush adventure set in California's 1854 mining camps. Prospectors Ned Allen, Dick Barnes, and companions rescue a man treed by a grizzly bear (dubbed "Old Eph"). The rescue is accomplished by Gospel George, a talkative but capable stranger wielding a short-handled axe. Gospel George delivers lengthy comic monologues about his talkative ex-wife and his valuable mule Roxy Ann. After dispatching the bear, George joins the prospectors' camp. A second stranger, nicknamed Sorrel-top for his red hair, reveals he has discovered gold deposits and fled his previous mining company with the secret, displaying raw gold particles as proof. The narrative involves frontier humor, physical danger, and the promise of lucrative mineral wealth.
