"The Bride of Paris: A Thrilling Story of the Commune" by A. P. Morris, from the August 11, 1880 issue of this pulp weekly, concerns painter Dorlan Ray and his nineteen-year-old daughter Osalind living in Paris during the Commune. Ray anxiously awaits a confrontation with the mysterious Victor Bramont, who holds some dark power over him from their shared past. Instead, the disgraced officer Philip De Vin arrives bearing an arrest warrant and a diamond ring—which Osalind recognizes as her lost lover Franz Edouin's betrothal gift, suggesting he is dead or false. De Vin, a rejected suitor for Osalind's hand, uses his influence with the Commune authorities to arrest Ray on fabricated charges. After a brief struggle and gunshot, Ray surrenders before soldiers, leaving Osalind vulnerable to De Vin's schemes.
