About this issue

This semi-monthly pulp magazine from Cincinnati includes three main contents: "The Dime Centennial Speaker" (edited by Dr. Legrand), a collection of patriotic speeches and orations on themes of liberty, union, and independence, featuring addresses attributed to historical figures like Washington and Franklin; "The Dime Centennial Songster," a songbook of Revolutionary and patriotic ballads including "Star Spangled Banner" and "Yankee Doodle"; a biography of George Washington by C. H. Pannell covering his life from youth through his presidency; the "Dime Base-Ball Player for 1876" with playing rules by H. Chadwick; and the featured serial "Spanish Jack, the Mountain Bandit" by Frederick Dewey, in which a middle-aged traveler on horseback encounters the treacherous quicksands of California's Salinas River, becoming mired with his horse as the sun sets, calling desperately for help.
