About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams from April 16, 1895 features "Rounding-up the Greasers" by T. J. Flanagan. The opening serialized western concerns a train robbery near San Antonio, Texas: bandits derail Number Twelve, kill engineer Cheatham and express messenger, wound fireman Jackson, and escape with currency and silver bars. Sheriff Maguire pursues with an inexperienced posse but is shot dead by bandit Jose Morales while approaching a grove; his men are routed in subsequent gunfire, with nearly all killed or scattered. The narrative shifts to Fred, a confident nineteen-year-old, who approaches his uncle Colonel Soule at the railroad office, arguing the sheriff's failure and proposing instead to recruit a dozen cowboys under Captain Morgan to pursue the thieves and recover the treasure. Soule approves the plan, and Morgan selects his best men for the expedition.
