About this issue

This issue features the opening serial "The Boy Shadow: Captain Mascot, the Nabob King—A Story of the Black Beads Band at No-Luck Camp" by T. C. Harbaugh. The narrative centers on a frontier mining camp where Paul Paget, the young, wealthy owner of the most productive mines, is found murdered near his workings. Gold Golliday, a mysterious mountaineer of unknown origins, discovers the body strangled and carries it through town. Suspecting conspiracy, Golliday summons his partner, a boy detective named Dandy Nugget ("the Boy Shadow"), to investigate. The chief suspect is Captain Mascot, a dangerous outlaw and "Nabob King" whom Paul had shot months earlier, triggering a "posting"—a frontier challenge to mortal combat. As Golliday sets out, Captain Mascot is revealed orchestrating mysterious expeditions with his lieutenant Black-Handed Saul, searching for hidden treasure. A girl named Rosy Vinon, orphaned and raised in the camp, shows quiet resolution about the crime. The story promises frontier violence, detection, and hidden conspiracies among No-Luck Camp's lawless inhabitants.
