Through careful observation—noting blood patterns, carriage wheel marks, and white hairs—Billy deduces the body was transported by four-wheeler drawn by a white horse and that the victim was left-handed and wore a missing ring. When an evening newspaper publishes the victim's sketch, a respectable West End gentleman, Edwin Keeler, identifies her as his niece Alma, who had left a note saying she'd visit her lover Horace Hurst. Billy's deductions about the victim's handedness create immediate tension with Keeler's account, suggesting complications ahead in the investigation.
