About this issue

This 1890 Beadle and Adams dime novel, by William R. Eyster, features "The Tie-To Sport; or, High Hustling at Sinners' Flat." The narrative begins when Daisy Dell Hammond, a professional gambler with the nickname "the Tie-To Sport," encounters a large, Bible-quoting wanderer named Giant Jim (or Guyon James) on a mountain trail. Warned of approaching danger, both men hide behind rocks and witness an outlaw ambuscade preparing to rob a stagecoach from Red Bend. During the confrontation, a mysterious figure attempts to drop a boulder on Hammond, which Giant Jim catches. The stage arrives carrying multiple passengers, including the talkative Billy Jingle from Side Ace and several women. An outlaw gang, led by a commanding figure, conducts a robbery, forcing all passengers to disembark. The plot involves themes of frontier crime, gambling, and unexpected alliances in the rough mining town of Sinners' Flat.
