About this issue

This issue contains "The Romance of the Rebellion at Bristol City," a Western serial by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick novels. The narrative opens with the vow of vengeful ex-convict Burk Dorris to destroy Deadwood Dick, Jr., a mining magnate who owns the valley pocket containing the prosperous city of Bristol City. When tenants and business owners refuse to pay rent, Dorris becomes the instigator of the uprising. The town's supporters of Dick include Mayor Clyde Carleton, hotel proprietor Joe Garry, and Old Avalanche. A mysterious dagger delivers a threatening message demanding Dick abandon his property. The primary antagonist emerges as Captain Jack Stonecut, a recently arrived saloon proprietor operating on Dick's land in defiance of the owner's temperance principles. The narrative tracks tensions between Dick's partisans and the rebellious faction as they await the proprietor's return to defend his interests.
