About this issue

"The Shadowed Shadower: The Romance of a City Death-Hunt" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, author of the "Buffalo Bill" novels. This detective melodrama features Dick Doom, a mysterious operative for the Secret Service League of New York, tasked with investigating the unsolved murder of Sedley Seaton—a case that has claimed multiple detectives' lives. A criminal organization calling itself the Gold Ghouls has issued death threats against anyone pursuing the case. Immediately after accepting the assignment, Doom is shot at on a city street; his assailant falls dead, killed by an unknown third party. Investigation reveals the assassin carried a revolver and knife both engraved with "Gold Ghoul, Executioner," confirming Doom's suspicions that the criminal syndicate is monitoring police headquarters. Dawson, a neighboring lawyer, witnesses the shooting from his doorstep, corroborating Doom's account to the skeptical police sergeant. Doom recognizes the dead assassin's face and remains determined to pursue the increasingly dangerous case.
