About this issue

The Cool Half Dozen: The Romance of a Remarkable Raid, by Ed. L. Wheeler (author of the Deadwood Dick novels), continues Wheeler's frontier action series. The narrative follows detective Richard Bristol, known as Deadwood Dick Jr., recruited by U.S. Secret Service Agent Mansing Mason and the governor to recover five million dollars in gold stolen from a New Orleans Mint shipment. The gold was taken during a train robbery near St. Louis and traced to Death's-Head Camp in Arizona. Bristol agrees to lead Mason's team despite the acknowledged dangers posed by the mysterious criminal known as the New Jesse. The story then shifts to a desert landscape where several travelers—an eccentric peddler lawyer named Eurastus Bungle, a Dutchman named Hans Yager, and an Irish tinker Mickey McGee—converge, each notably wearing diamond dice-shaped pins, suggesting deeper connections to the central mystery.
