About this issue

Three men in bowler hats and dark suits occupy a sparse interior in this wood-engraved cover for "Broadway Billy's Team," a detective story by J. C. Cowdrick. Published by Beadle and Adams at five cents, the Half Dime Library exemplified the pulp magazine format that saturated late-nineteenth-century America. These weekly story papers, printed on cheap wood pulp and distributed through newsstands, delivered serialized adventure across genres: crime, mystery, romance, and the fantastic. The cover's sharp lines and period costume signal the urban detective tale, a genre that would eventually migrate into comic book form. Beadle's Half Dime Library, launched in 1877, sold millions of copies and established narrative formulas and visual conventions that shaped popular fiction for generations.
