About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams No. 769 (Vol. XXX) contains the serialized detective story "Broadway Billy, the Retriever Detective," authored by J. C. Cowdrick. The narrative follows Billy Weston, his portly companion Skinny, and elderly ranger Roger Watts as they receive an urgent telegram in Denver requiring Billy to return home due to his mother's illness. The three men depart by rail eastward, traveling through Kansas City, Chicago, and Philadelphia toward New York. During their journey, Billy observes fellow passengers on the train—a well-dressed older man resembling a preacher, an elegant middle-aged woman (apparently his wife), and four other companions including a young woman of eighteen. Billy's detective instincts awaken, suspecting something illicit about the group despite their superficially respectable appearance. He becomes unable to suppress his investigative impulses despite his companions' protests, setting in motion the mystery central to the serial's plot.
