About this issue

This issue presents "The Demon Doctor of Dixon's Deposit," a frontier romance by Ed. L. Wheeler (author of the Deadwood Dick novels). The story is set in a remote mining camp that straddles the U.S.-Canadian border in the northwestern wilderness, creating ongoing jurisdictional disputes. Chapter I introduces the settlement's colorful inhabitants, including nationalist rivals "Yankee Doodle" Doodle and "Johnny Bull" Hobbs, saloon proprietor Billy McFarland, mayor Henry Dixon, and the mysterious Dr. Henry Witmore, a well-educated physician who maintains a large kennel of dogs and lives with his daughter Tella and niece Nola. Chapter II depicts a heated argument between Doodle and Hobbs that escalates into a violent brawl in the International Saloon, ultimately broken up by the camp's strongest man, Ben Bone. The narrative emphasizes frontier lawlessness and isolation, with the camp severed from outside civilization.
