About this issue

"Trapping Big Game: A Tale of the Great City" by T. C. Harbaugh presents an urban detective narrative. Andy Atom, a crippled boy living in a New York tenement, works with the mysterious Major Manilla. Andy steals a valuable letter from Mother Rockaway's house, which delights the Major. That night, Mother Rockaway discovers the theft and searches Andy's room unsuccessfully. Meanwhile, Major Manilla travels to Jersey City, where he deceives elderly Caleb Pine of Harrisburg into believing he is "Luke Lester," a friend of Pine's supposed niece "Susan." Manilla lures Pine to a house under false pretenses and violently seizes important documents from Pine's traveling bag, revealing himself as a criminal conspirator. When Pine attempts resistance with a chair, Manilla's armed associate Blossom forces Pine's submission. The Major refuses Pine's offers of compensation, claiming the documents' worth exceeds any monetary value.
