About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams contains "The Wilds-Out at White Water" by William G. Patten, a frontier adventure serial. The narrative opens with Frank Stillman and his wife Ione isolated in a mountain cabin near white-water rapids. When miners discover the area's gold deposits, Stillman's location is compromised, forcing rapid development into White Water City. Conflict erupts between rival mining factions led by Frank Stillman and the desperado Black Burk; Burk is eventually driven out after threatening violence. The townspeople elect Stillman mayor after the birth of his child becomes a community celebration. A second section introduces "Stuttering Charlie," a young man with a pronounced stammer who meets a girl named Harriet ("Happy Harry") near the mining town. The serial blends domestic melodrama with frontier action, mining-camp vernacular, and romantic subplot.
