About this issue

This Beadle & Adams pulp, published May 26, 1891, features "The Rival Camps of the Northern Border" by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick novels. The story follows Yankum Titus, a stage driver running the route between Junction City and Red Shirt camp, who has been repeatedly stopped by six masked men calling themselves "the Lost Six." They seek a passenger named Deadwood Dick. When Dick boards the stage and the masked men appear again, he reveals himself and agrees to accompany them. After a three-mile journey on horseback through treacherous terrain, the six men lead Dick to a secret cavern hideaway accessible via a narrow ledge overlooking Red Shirt camp. The men reveal they sent Dick a letter two months prior requesting his arrival. The narrative involves mystery, Western action, and masked vigilantes seeking to recruit the famous outlaw hero for an unspecified scheme.
