Billy and Skinny, their detective instincts engaged, begin investigating the seemingly motiveless killing, questioning whether victims Miss Wesselley (romantically connected to Rentaway) and rival Harrison Waldmar hold clues. The narrative emphasizes Billy's street-smart deductive methods and banter-filled dynamic with Skinny.
