Deadwood Dick, Jr.'s Still Hunt, No. 2, April 14, 1891. Beadle and Adams weekly periodical (Vol. XXVIII, No. 716). "The Second Round in San Francisco," authored by Edward L. Wheeler, inaugurates this issue as the featured serial. Deadwood Dick, Jr. (Richard M. Bristol), a crime investigator renowned for pursuing criminals to justice, is summoned by lawyers Samuel and Daniel Kincarth to investigate the murder of Phoebe Roylan, an eighty-year-old woman fatally stabbed in her San Francisco home. Though circumstantial evidence—a night watchman's testimony, bloodstains on his sleeve, a missing knife—points to Howard Crandford, the victim's young grandnephew, the lawyers believe him innocent. Dick agrees to investigate, visiting Crandford in jail. The case hinges on disputed inheritance arrangements and a contested will between the sisters, with Crandford alternately favored and opposed by different family members.
