Young Chincapin Dan pursues Hawkings in vengeful retaliation for his father's murder. During the chase, Chincapin Dan shoots Hawkings's horse in the river; Hawkings appears to drown in the rapids, though he secretly survives clinging to a submerged moss-covered rock. The next morning, Bruno Hawkings (the outlaw's son) discovers his father alive on the rock, though critically wounded with a shattered wrist. The narrative emphasizes gunfire, horseback pursuit, and violent confrontation across Western landscape settings.
