About this issue

This serial, authored by Philip S. Warne, begins with Chapter I ("A Point of Honor") at Camp Seaton in the Black Hills. Major Pollard confronts the Hon. Charles Caxton, an English gentleman, over a morally compromised scheme. Six weeks prior, a lady arrived at the fort; both men courted her, but she favored the mining superintendent. To eliminate his rival, Caxton orchestrated the superintendent's ruin: enlisting a ruffian to sabotage the hydraulic mining operation, which caused a fatal flooding. Caxton profited from the ensuing market chaos. The superintendent now languishes in the guard-house, falsely accused of road-agent crimes through Caxton's manipulation of the outlaw Corvette. Wracked with conscience, Pollard proposes a compromise: offer the superintendent liberty if he abandons his suit and leaves the region. Caxton summons his Irish valet, Terry Flynn, to arrange the prisoner's escape, appearing negligent rather than deliberate. Flynn expertly navigates the delicate logistics, identifying sympathetic soldiers and securing resources including a swift horse.
