About this issue

This serialized novel by E. L. Wheeler, author of the "Deadwood Dick" series, opens in a Chicago lager beer saloon three months after the Haymarket executions. A group of anarchists—Germans, English, and Spanish—gather to discuss labor grievances and the death of mill owner Coleridge. Among them is a young American stranger who openly defends the executed anarchists' hanging, sparking violent confrontation. He reveals himself as detective Richard "Deadwood Dick" Bristol, searching for a man named Dore Dante. Struck unconscious by anarchist Jacob Steinmetz, Dick is searched. His wallet contains a warrant for Dante's arrest issued by Cora Coleridge for threatening her life, and a cipher message decoding to "Girl must die—Suspects! DANTE!" The anarchists realize their plot against Cora Coleridge has been compromised and fear exposure.
