About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly (July 12, 1887) features "Buckskin Bill, the Comanche Shadow," a serial by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, author of western pulp adventures. The narrative follows fifteen-year-old Billy Middleton, called "Buckskin Bill" since his escape from Comanche captivity months earlier. The opening presents Bill hiding in a tree above an Apache camp holding two settlers captive, Dan Ellis and Reuben Carter. In subsequent chapters, the story reveals Bill's origin—captured by Comanches years before, he stole a pony and escaped during a storm. Now a settlement hero and schoolboy, Bill discovers thirteen Indians lying in wait near the log-cabin schoolhouse. He organizes the armed older boys and Parson Green into a defensive ambush, positioning them at windows and doors while he scouts the approaching warriors. The story combines frontier action with schoolhouse adventure and Indian capture narratives typical of the period's western dime novels.
