This issue of Beadle and Adams' dime novel series (No. 495, January 18, 1887) features "Arizona Joe: A Story of the Strange Life of Captain Joe Bruce" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham. The narrative follows fourteen-year-old Joe Bruce, whose father is missing and uncle has died, leaving him and his widowed mother in financial hardship. Determined to support her, Joe leaves military school to seek fortune in Texas as a cowboy, having been encouraged by a wealthy cattle rancher. Traveling to Little Rock, Joe enters a marksmanship competition to win a horse, saddle, and a belt of arms (revolvers). Through exceptional shooting ability honed in New York galleries, he defeats experienced marksmen in both revolver and rifle contests, winning the equipment needed for his Texas adventure. The serialized story emphasizes frontier adventure, youth heroism, and coming-of-age themes typical of the period's popular fiction.
