The narrative introduces supporting characters including Constable Gray, the village authorities, and Adelbert Abbott and his wealthy uncle Cyrus Bigelow, visiting Black Bluffs amid the scandal. The serial mystery follows Sim's reluctant detective work as the town seeks answers.
