About this issue

This November 1886 Beadle and Adams dime novel presents "Yankee Eph's Prairie Cruise," a Western romance set in old Texas by Henry J. Thomas. The opening chapter, "The Prairie Fight," follows three experienced American rangers—Black George, Long Eph, and Jake Jaggerton—as they spot a mysterious fire near the hacienda of Comanche Dick, their leader. Racing across the prairie toward potential danger, they encounter approximately twenty Comanche warriors. A sustained skirmish ensues, featuring tactical maneuvering in darkness. The rangers employ discipline and cunning—training their mustangs to drop flat when under fire, separating to create illusions of greater numbers, and executing stealthy reconnaissance. Individual combat sequences depict Black George shooting an approaching scout at close range and Long Eph positioning himself defensively against a Comanche preparing to leap over a horse. The narrative emphasizes frontier combat expertise and frontier camaraderie among the three protagonists.
