About this issue

This pulp magazine issue features "Captain Carl, the Corsair" and "A Cabin Boy's Luck" as its main serials. The primary narrative concerns the Kenyon family of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay region. Twin siblings Kate and King Kenyon, raised at the ancestral Castle Kenyon mansion, are skilled in both academics and outdoor pursuits—horseback riding, sailing, marksmanship, and music. Following their mother's death, the father and Kate return home after a year abroad, while King remains in Europe. During a violent storm, Kate observes a dismasted naval schooner in distress offshore. Overcoming the fears of her enslaved crew, she commands them to man the life-boat and personally steers toward the wreck to attempt rescue. Meanwhile, her father Cyle, grieving at his wife's grave, hears the distress cannon and rushes back to the mansion, discovering commotion among the household servants regarding the unfolding crisis at sea.
