About this issue

This serialized adventure novel by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham follows the yacht Cloud and its young Cuban captain Isodor Christobal during the Lopez Expedition era. Fleeing Cuban waters with arms and ammunition intended for insurgents, Isodor and a general commanding forty men encounter the Spanish brig-of-war El Moro. A fierce chase ensues across moonlit seas; though the Cloud sustains damage and loses crew members to cannon fire, her superior sailing allows escape. A hurricane strikes, forcing the crew to strip sails and endure the tempest's fury with several men swept overboard. As conditions briefly improve, the Spanish vessel reappears through breaking clouds, triggering another desperate chase across heavy seas. The narrative emphasizes naval action, political intrigue surrounding Cuban independence efforts, and Isodor's courage and seamanship amid mounting perils.
