About this issue

The Ocean Bloodhound; The Red Pirates of the Caribbees by Samuel W. Pearce is an adventure serial set aboard the merchant brig Nancy Jones, homeward bound to New York after a profitable trading cruise through Africa and South America. Captain Zeke Jones and mate Job Rogers encounter a mysterious schooner in the West Indies. That night, pirates led by the notorious Pedro Santillez board the vessel in a surprise attack, overwhelming the crew and confining them below decks. The captain is wounded and bound; the cargo—valuable ivory, skins, and trade goods—is seized. The pirate leader discovers Mrs. Colonel Sanders and her child sheltering in the captain's cabin. As he threatens the woman, the mate Job Rogers, having recovered from the initial assault, intervenes violently to protect them, engaging the pirate in combat. The narrative emphasizes maritime action, courage under duress, and maritime peril.
