About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams's Dime Novel presents "Merle Monte's Cruise; The Chase of 'The Gold Ship'" by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, a maritime adventure tale set in antebellum New Orleans. The narrative opens in a gambling hall where the mysterious Basil Branch loses heavily at cards. Branch is then approached by Eduardo Valero, a Mexican officer from the merchant brig Montezuma, bearing a letter from the pirate captain Brandt. Valero proposes that Branch procure a crew to seize the Montezuma, offering payment for Branch's participation. Branch agrees, revealing himself as a former officer of means. The story then shifts to Branch's backstory: he is the grandson of an English nobleman who secretly fled England with his beloved and wealth after his father's arranged exile, settling upriver from New Orleans at an estate called "The Retreat." Branch's dying father reveals this genealogical secret and a binding familial vow to his son, now passed to Branch himself—a supernatural restraint influencing his melancholy disposition.
