About this issue

This weekly dime novel installment by Colonel Prentiss Ingraham, "Grit, the Bravo Sport; or, The Woman Trailer," is a Western romance and adventure serial. The narrative opens with Edith Balfour, a young woman newly arrived from boarding school in the East, becoming lost on the Texas prairie while riding her horse Bonnyfoot. Pursued by a wolf pack as darkness falls, she contemplates suicide rather than being torn apart. A mysterious stranger—tall, youthful, golden-haired, dressed as a dandified frontiersman—intervenes, killing the wolves with expert marksmanship and saving her life. He offers her shelter at a nearby timber grove and promises to guide her home in the morning. The installment concludes by introducing her father Floyd Balfour's ranch and establishing a connection to Roy Brandt, apparently a young wealthy man who once offered financial assistance to the impoverished Balfour family. The serial appears to be a continuation of "Bison Bill, the Prince of the Reins."
