About this issue

By William R. Eyster, this serialized western tale follows a ragged traveler whose mustang is shot from ambush. He discovers a wounded man in a ravine and takes his canteen. The narrative shifts to High Pine, a mining camp plagued by violence, marauders, and Apache raids. Geyser Joe leads a supply train to the Go-Down shaft mine, accompanied by the treacherous Mexican Alan Argado and a girl named Raquel claiming to be his daughter. A secret conversation reveals Argado plots to assassinate someone en route, while Raquel, who despises him but seeks her own revenge, vows to protect the train's captain. That night, Argado pursues Geyser Joe into the darkness and ambushes him with a knife. Joe counters the attack and they engage in combat, avoiding gunfire to prevent alerting a nearby Indian camp.
