About this issue

This serial installment, "The Boy Trailers; or, Dainty Lance on the War-Path" by Joseph E. Badger, Jr., is a frontier adventure narrative featuring two young trappers, Dainty Lance and Hardy Zeph, tracking a mysterious woman called the Wolf Queen and four differently-colored wolves through Indian country. From their concealment, they witness her unarmed combat with the wolves and observe an approaching party led by Dirk Weeninx—a renegade trapper they believed dead—and Ham Toplong. Weeninx seeks information about Sibyl, whom he claims as his wife and whom the boys are desperately searching for after her father, a mad hermit, drugged and abducted her. The Wolf Queen, revealed as "Netawaka," holds the attackers at bay with her bow while four Indian allies attempt to flank her position. The narrative involves themes of wilderness pursuit, lost maidens, and frontier combat.
