About this issue

"The Boy Bear-Slayer of the Sierras," by Oll Coombes, serializes a Western adventure. Sixteen-year-old Ned Hooker, known as Bearslayer, is a celebrated hunter in Virginia City who has earned fame and wealth slaying grizzly bears. One midnight, masked road-agents enter his cabin demanding he cease bear-hunting or swear to keep silent about mountain hideouts. When Bearslayer refuses, they threaten him with hanging. A second masked group—apparently Vigilantes—suddenly intervenes, shooting erupts, and both parties flee. Suspecting treachery from someone he trusted, Bearslayer pursues the outlaws into the mountains at night. Following wolves attracted to the blood trail, he pursues the group through a deepening canyon. During his chase, he fends off a wolf pack before being attacked and overwhelmed by five men emerging from the darkness.
