About this issue

This issue features "Yellowstone Jack: Trappers of the Enchanted Ground" by Joseph E. Badger, serialized in Beadle's Half-Dime Library (January 1877). The narrative opens with an emigrant wagon train caught in the Shicha-chetish pass as a sudden storm develops. Old trapper Hob Farris warns of a pouderée—a violent mountain storm—but wagon-master Chris Camp dismisses the danger. When the hurricane strikes with devastating force, vehicles overturn, animals are killed or scattered, and the party is thrown into chaos. Frank Maynard pursues two runaway horses pulling a light wagon containing Ada Dixon and Minnie Warren through the blinding snowstorm into an unknown upper pass. The excerpt ends with Maynard hearing a faint cry for help, leaving the fates of the women uncertain. This is an action-driven adventure tale combining frontier survival drama with romantic concern.
