About this issue

This April 1901 issue features "Dick Darling, The Pony Express Rider" by Frederick Whittaker, a western adventure serial set in Nevada Territory twenty years prior. The narrative centers on two Pony Express mail riders at remote Dolores Station: the slovenly but skilled frontiersman Jack Hardin and the refined, meticulous young rider Dick Darling. After a marksmanship contest—in which Darling impresses Hardin by shooting a silver dollar edge-on—the riders encounter two half-breed sisters, Chevrette and Levrette, daughters of a wealthy fur-trader. Both girls ride as warriors and have fallen in love with Darling, while also facing pursuit from Blackfoot and Ute braves seeking to force them into marriage. The chapter breaks off as the girls deliver warnings of danger on the trail. The serial combines elements of western action, frontier romance, and adventure.
