About this issue

"Cinnamon Gap," by Ed. L. Wheeler (author of the Deadwood Dick novels), features Cinnabar Jim and his three traveling companions—Purty Pete, a rough frontiersman; Heintz Donnerblitz, a Dutchman; and Wah Lung, a Chinese laborer—arriving at a mining camp celebrating its tenth anniversary. The camp's mayor, "Ornery" Ike Blossom, has ordered a grand jubilee featuring Don Gilfrano's circus and a dance hall. The protagonists discover a Salvation Army tent flying a white flag and learn that Mayor Blossom has ordered the religious group to vacate by noon or face destruction of their property. Cinnabar Jim, moved by the group's cause and his mother's Christian faith, volunteers to confront the mayor and deliver a message about their legal standing outside town limits. The narrative combines Western frontier adventure with moral conflict.
