About this issue

This dime novel serial, from Beadle and Adams' Buffalo Bill Stories (November 16, 1896), follows an eighteen-year-old youth captured by seven border desperadoes on a western trail. When the gang demands his eighty-five dollars and outfit, the boy draws his revolvers despite being lassoed, forcing a tense standoff. The captain agrees to let him keep his horse and outfit for the money, but betrays him. An unseen friend fires a deadly shot, killing one outlaw. The gang retaliates by binding the youth and preparing to execute him by hanging. The unknown marksman is revealed to be Harold, the boy's companion, who has been following behind. The narrative emphasizes frontier lawlessness, youthful bravery, and gunplay as central action elements.
