About this issue

This issue contains The Double Hero; or, The Lieutenant and the Major's Daughter by N. C. Iron, author of "The Daughter of Liberty." The naval historical fiction chronicles the construction of two warships, the Lawrence and Niagara, on Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Commodore Oliver H. Perry commands the shipyard operation where American workmen, driven by patriotic determination, fell forest timber and construct two vessels intended to challenge British naval dominance. Perry must solve the practical obstacle of floating the heavily armed Lawrence over a shallow sandbar while a hostile British fleet blockades the harbor. Through strategy and audacity, the American squadron escapes the blockade when the British commander, Commodore Barclay, absents himself attending a dinner in Canada. Perry subsequently dispatches his young officer friend as an ambassador to General Harrison to recruit soldiers and frontiersmen to augment his undermanned crews before the inevitable naval engagement.
