About this issue

This weekly story, published by Beadle and Adams in August 1882, features "Old Tar Knuckle and His Boy Chums; or, The Monsters of the Esquimaux Border" by Roger Starbuck. The narrative follows Charley Nye, a sixteen-year-old son of a whaler's owner, who falls ill aboard the Beacon while whale-blubber processing in Russian America. The captain leaves Charley ashore to recover, accompanied by old seaman Nick Knuckle, harpooner Tom Hasler, and Esquimaux youth Yonkitt. A wooden shelter is constructed near Norton Sound with provisions and supplies. When visiting Esquimaux inhabitants arrive seeking food, Knuckle entertains the group, particularly a baby. The story culminates in an exciting whale hunt when a bowhead whale appears offshore; Knuckle's crew races their whale-boat against competing Esquimaux kayaks to harpoon the creature. The narrative emphasizes maritime adventure, cooperation among diverse workers, and dramatic action.
