About this issue

This issue of the penny dreadful features "The Phantom Mountain," a serialized adventure story by an unnamed author. The narrative centers on Gordon Haverlock, a well-traveled adventurer, who rescues Dr. Wallace Bruce's niece Hilda Armitage from a burning building. Haverlock's heroism leads to his stay at Bruce's home. That night, a mysterious intruder steals a sacred Indian gem called the snake-wort from the doctor's study—a stone possessing supposed supernatural powers intensifying whatever moral influence surrounds it. When Bruce discovers the theft, he and Haverlock resolve to pursue the thief, suspecting him to be an Eastern agent seeking the stone's malevolent powers. The narrative blends gothic mystery with exotic adventure, as Hilda's premonitory dream of the men battling "black giants" foreshadows danger ahead. The issue concludes with police arriving to investigate the theft and track the suspect.
