Editor Sylvester Horton assigns her first assignment: investigating rumors that Leonie St. Clair, the wife of artist Vincent St. Clair, has mysteriously reappeared alive after disappearing six months prior and being presumed dead or a suicide victim. Leonie is reportedly hiding in her husband's home. Marion had previously gained notoriety when rescued from an opium den. Reporter Alma Allyn, Marion's friend and mentor, pledges to assist her. The narrative explores newspaper office dynamics, with Mr. Villard, an assistant, expressing suspicion of Horton's intentions toward the beautiful Marion, and hinting at complex motivations surrounding the St. Clair case. Marion undertakes interviews with Leonie's millionaire father Geoffrey Townsend and the artist husband to uncover the truth behind the woman's disappearance.
