HOW IT ENDED. 15. “So I find you in my own house, viper!” exclaimed Je- honikam, brandishing a cane as the youth rose to his feet. ‘Pil teach you to defy me in this way !” And flourishing the walking-stick he sprung in the direc- tion of Ralph, intending to give him a sound thrashing. “No, no, father,” pleaded Nancy, as she stepped before him ; “you must not hurt ‘Ralph !” But the angry father pushed her rudely aside, and the next moment found himself locked in the embrace of Ralph. The young hunter was muscular, extremely so, and though Jehoni- kam was nearly his equal in bulk, he was far from possessing his strength. In vain he attempted to use his staff.. It was wrenched from his hand, and himself raised bodily in the arms of the man he would have chastised, and carried to his own door. Nor did the young man stop there. Directly into the street he proceeded with his burden, and upon ‘Setting him down Ralph remarked : “Now, sir, we are upon ground where each has an equal right, and if you attempt to disturb me I shall forget every- thing else, and defend myself to the utmost. I warn you that you will get no tender treatment, after what has passed !” Thus speaking Ralph placed his unwilling burden, upon his feet, and released his hold. For a moment it seemed the baffled fur-dealer could not restrain his wrath, but after gaZ- ing upon the athletic form of the man before him, he swal- lowed it, saying : | “F only want you never to darken a door of mine again.” “Tf I do you will be very likely to know. it,’ was all the answer the young man vouchsafed; and as a crowd was col- lecting, Jechonikam. beat a retreat toward his store. — As before, the bystanders eagerly demanded to know the cause of the tumult. But. Ralph would not gratify them, and the fur-dealer was too deeply wrought upon to submit to any questioning. «aw 48 Cconnicloooks.comn)
