The decks of the cutter were now crowded with her men, all jubilant at what seemed a certain prospect of capturing the long-songht-for prize. Another shot boomed along from the frigate, and again the splinters flew from the clipper, her weather-quarter sail now suffering. Shot after shot continued to pour upon her, until finally her foremast was seen to go by the board. Cheers now rung from the cutter’s crew. She had come up into the wind, with eyery sail flapping.
